Botox? Isn’t that just a wrinkle reducer?
While Botox is most well known as an aesthetic treatment used to relax wrinkles in the face resulting in a more youthful glow, Botox was actually a medical treatment before it was ever used aesthetically! Botox was FDA approved in 1989 for treatment of blepharospasms (uncontrolled blinking) and wasn’t approved for cosmetic purposes until 2002!

Botox was approved for the prevention of migraines in 2010, and it is widely used in the medical field for a host of medical conditions including hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), dystonia (neck pain and abnormal neck positioning), spasticity, anal fissures, overactive bladder. More recently it is even being studied on preventing atrial fibrillation in patients after open heart surgery!

What is Botox?
Botox or Botulinumtoxin-A is an injectable toxin that when injected into a muscle works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contraction. This helps reduce muscle stiffness and tightness. When being used for migraines, we inject Botox into 7 key muscles of the head and neck which leads to less muscle tension decreasing both the frequency and severity of a patient’s headaches.
